Instructions for Handling And Installation of Mechanical Seals.
INTRODUCTION

These instructions are enclosed to help the user to familiarise himself with the seal and its intended use. Please read seal installation before commencing seal installation work, and implement all instructions, which are mentioned herein. These instructions must be kept handy and within reach of staff handling the seals.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
1. The following notations are used in this sheet for highlighting instructions of particular significance:
NOTE Refers to special information on seal installation and operation to obtain extended service life.
WARNING!
Refers to special instructions, which help prevent seal damage or otherwise help improve maintenance ambience.
DANGER!
Refers to mandatory instructions for prevention of personal injury and avoiding damage to seal or its environment.
Note 1 : Only technically qualified and trained personnel shall handle installation / maintenance of these products after they have read and understood this instruction sheet.
Note 2 : The installation must be carried out only under technically perfect conditions as set forth elsewhere in this sheet and as instructed by General Seal Co. from time to time. Operating limits of the seal as shown in accompanying seal data sheet or Pump-maker's instruction manuals must be scrupulously adhered to.
Warning : If pumped fluid is hazardous or toxic, special steps should be taken to contain potential leakages by keeping back-up installations like Quench connections, Buffer Fluid systems, Restriction Bushing, etc. in good service order. Additional information on hazardous fluid handling can be obtained from their makers for specific cases.
Danger! : PTFE and fluorocarbon components of the seal must never be burned or incinerated as the fumes are highly toxic. If fluorocarbons are accidentally heated above 400 C they can decompose, and use protective gloves while handling, as hydrofluoric acid may be present.

Operating Conditions: -
Maximum Pressure: 12 Atm.
Maximum Temperature: 200 C
Maximum Speed: Pl. ref. to General Seal.

Checking the Equipment Prior to Installation: -
It is most essential to maintain proper dimensions and alignment on the equipment before seal is installed. This has profound impact on the service life of the seal. Please check following using a vernier caliper, a micrometer, a portable roughness tester and a dial-gauge: -

Shaft / Sleeve surface Finish: 0.2 microns
Shaft / Sleeve Ovality / out-of-roundness: <0.1 mm
Shaft Axial Play: <0.125 mm
Shaft Run-out: < 0.025mm/inch
Concentricity of Seal Chamber to the shaft/sleeve: < 0.15 mm
Seal housing end-face square ness to the shaft/sleeve: < 0.125 mm
Impeller Boss running clearance with casing wear-ring As per pump makers' recommendation.
Shaft Clearance with bush bearing 0.0254mm per inch of shaft dia.



Note 3 :
Always refer to technical drawings/fitting instructions enclosed in the seal box before starting fitment. If no drawings are to be found inside, you can obtain a copy from General Seal, or refer to that section of the equipment instruction manual dealing with seal design and handling.

Note 4 :
The fluid film between the sealing faces may be destroyed by vibration in running gear, by cavitation in impeller, by dry running of seals inside the seal chamber,and by other causes that force the seals to operate outside their design limits. This will result in higher frictional contact between the sealing faces, and reduce seal life.

Note 5 :
The frictional heat inside the seal-chamber or stuffing box MUST be removed by use of flushing media; all flushing lines/fluid circulation lines to & from seal chamber must be kept in good order and kept connected to the seal chamber during operation.
